I went wall-climbing with my occasional climbing buddy Rachel last night over at Power-Up Tandang Sora, and it was great! It’s been months since I last got to climb, and it was both exhilarating and frustrating to get back to it. Hopefully she and I will be able to establish a more regular routine of going, since one of the reasons we stalled for so long was because our schedules wouldn’t line up. Must make time!
My body hurts like hell, but it’s the nice kind of pain that comes with solid, healthy exertion. I should be careful not to over-exert, though, given that I’m so out of routine now. Rachel’s a rather, ah, driven climber, and keeping up with her can be a hell of a challenge. It’s always good to have a motivated partner, of course.

… is a double-edged sword. Hope can all too easily become disappointment, especially when capricious people and events are in play.
Some posts back, I mentioned that I was very eagerly looking forward to something that I couldn’t openly discuss at the time. Well, it didn’t pan out, so I may as well tell you what it was: a full-time job offer. For my regular readers, you know how passionately I love the freelance life, so it was a very big deal for me to even consider a new full-time gig, and more so for me to be giddy about it. Alas, it seems to be on ice, so … *shrug*
Life goes on, though, and while I tend to take disappointment badly, it’s never stopped me from bouncing back and continually hoping for better circumstances. And things do work out: I have new freelance projects running, and I’ve got plenty of other things to attend to.
Speaking of double-edged swords, I recently watched an excellent BBC miniseries titled Jekyll, starring James Nesbitt and written by Steven Moffat (of Doctor Who and Coupling fame). I’ve always enjoyed Moffat’s narrative style, and it was both interesting and surprising to see where he took the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story. Nesbitt did a fantastic job, of course, playing the divided Tom Jackman/Mr. Hyde. It was also amusing to see Gina Bellman (whom I also know from Coupling) in the role of Jackman’s wife, because she brought a certain method of engagement that suits both her and the character. The entire series runs six hour-long episodes, with solid pacing throughout. As anticipation goes, Moffat’s storytelling style did not disappoint. If you’re into psychological horror shot through with mysteries and twists, you shouldn’t miss this.

One of the things I’ve been busy with of late (aside from a lot of work meetings) is playing Magic: The Gathering again.

This here’s Robin, examining her Sliver deck during what was easily the LONGEST single Magic game I’ve ever played. We started at 10pm, and ended at a little before 2am. That’s what happens when a cold war begins during a free-for-all game, with no one readily willing to tip the balance of power. The orderly cards to the left are Leonard’s, and the mildly messy ones in the foreground are mine. :p
